John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth Proctor isn't the first wife to be taken away because of witchcraft. Giles Corey and Francis Nurse's wives have been taken as well. Giles exclamed that the accusations against the three wives were only made so that greedy townspeople can take the property of who has been accused.

In order to save his wife John brings Mary Warren to confess she's never seen the Devil and the girls have been fakinf it the entire time. When Mary says it the girls tunr on her and accuse her of witchcraft. Then to ease the tension Proctor admitts the truth about Abigail and the affair and how she is a liar and adultress which proves they cannot trust her.

Proctor also says that Elizabeth will niot lie and can be questioned about anything. Therefore to figure out the truth they call her in. The judge tells her to keep her eyes on him and not on her husband then asks about the situation between Abigail and John. Elizabeth doesn't want to sentence her husband to death so she lies for him and Judge Danforth sent her back to prison and as she's being taken back John yells, "I have confessed it!"
